2017 Refugee Conferences
If you work with refugees, either in a formal capacity, as a volunteer, or through your church, it can be encouraging to connect with others who are also passionate about welcoming refugees. Our work can get lonely from time to time, especially in this political climate, and we may experience situations we aren’t sure how to address or questions we don’t know the answers to. Today I want to briefly highlight three refugee conferences taking place in 2017. These are all wonderful resources for those who work in refugee ministry.
The Justice Conference: June 9-10
The Justice Conference was started in 2010 and since then has developed into an amazing resource for Christians who are passionate about social justice issues. The theme for this year’s conference is “Love Thy Neighbor” based on Mark 12. This year’s speakers who are uniquely equipped to speak about refugees and immigrants include Ann Voskamp, Jenny Yang, and Vickie Reddy. You can check out the full list of speakers here. I hope you will consider joining me for The Justice Conference this year, especially if you are from the greater Chicagoland area.
Refugee Highway Partnership Refugee Roundtable: July 26-28
The annual Refugee Roundtable is a hosted and organized by the Refugee Highway Partnership, “a network of Christ-followers who share a common passion to see the Church minister the whole gospel amongst those who have been forcibly displaced.” The conference takes place in a different North American city each year (this year it will be held in Dallas), and consists of plenary speakers, breakout discussion groups, and more. I am honored to be presenting a breakout session this year, so if any of you are planning to attend I would love to organize a meetup one day or have a meal together. Send me a message here if you plan to attend.
PCA Global Missions Conference: November 9-10
This year the Presbyterian Church in America’s annual missions conference features a “pre-conference” focused on welcoming the refugee. You can choose to attend only the pre-conference, or both the pre-conference and the main missions conference. The keynote speaker for the pre-conference is Matthew Soerens, World Relief’s Director of Church Mobilization whom I interviewed here. There are also several breakout sessions throughout the second day. This conference, like the Refugee Roundtable above, takes place in Dallas.
I hope that this list of refugee conferences serves as a helpful resource for you and that you might have the opportunity to attend at least one of them this year. I can guarantee that you will learn a lot and have great opportunities to network with others who are also serving refugees across the US. I'll be attending all three of these refugee conferences, so if you also plan to attend one please let me know. I would love to meet you and hear about your work with refugees.
